The arrival of a second Speedmaster SX 52-5 at Cowan Print marks the start of a new era. The company is virtually quadrupling its size with a move to new premises in Kilsyth, near Glasgow.
In readiness for the press, the new premises has been modernised and repainted and a new heating system and LED lighting has been installed. The proximity of the site means that all staff can easily transfer. The previous unit was leased but this premises has been bought by managing director Craig Cowan to give the company the space to grow.

The new press, a replica of the one it has successfully run since 2010, is an additional machine. Having it in place ahead of the transfer of the rest of the plant means that the company can ensure there is no interruption to normal service. It will also enable Cowan Print to expand, add new work, and be more flexible
in its turnaround times. It has been running to capacity recently.
The SX 52 will feature the Press Center, which makes it very easy to operate. One more operator will be recruited and the company will benefit from the two days training when the press arrives. Having five colours gives it the chance to coat or varnish work but also to offer special colours.
‘It was always going to be a Heidelberg press. I like the build and the operators like the technology,’ said Craig Cowan, managing director. ‘The first SX 52 has been a success and reliable. Having two machines is additional peace of mind. We have back up, flexibility and can keep saying yes to new opportunities.’
The company also had the press rollers on the existing press changed recently so it is ‘printing as new’. Both presses will run Heidelberg Saphira plates.
