Blood Brothers Review - Carl

Even before the show, the hype was incredible. Everyone that I had spoken about it to had said one of two things, either: they really wanted to see it because they had heard amazing things; or that they had seen it and it is incredible. In fact I think one of the people I spoke to had watched it 19 times! The Assembly Hall Theatre was jam packed full of audience members, including the Mayor of Royal Tunbridge Wells, who were ecstatic at the thought of the nationally famous production coming to Kent. As we sat down, everyone around me was talking to each other about the past times they, or somebody they knew had seen it. The atmosphere was electric with the bustling excitement of the audience.

Right from the start the show was captivating, the mysterious narrator (Marti Pellow) using his deep Scottish accent to draw in all the audience into his charismatic grip (the fan girls from when he was part of his band Wet Wet Wet were effected the most). The sets, I have to say, were astonishing. Massive houses on either side of the stage with a suspended bridge joining the houses composed of the main set, and as well as this, some sets were lowered from above the stage which were as detailed (if not more detailed) than the main set; Interior of a mansion, inside of a courtroom, a prison etc. There was some fantastic acting, especially that of the Liverpudlian brother who was the best for me, his transition from his not a care in the world child to his deeply depressed and troubled man was seamless and effective.

It was a fantastic show and a great night out. The show received the largest and longest standing ovation I think I have ever seen, and they thoroughly deserved it.
