Canterbury gets a Gourmet Burger Kitchen

Without a doubt we all love Tunbridge Wells, it is a place of bountiful beauty and excellent entertainment, but every once in a while it is nice to try some different scenery. So, why not make your way up to the historic and picturesque city of Canterbury to tickle your taste buds at the brand new Gourmet Burger Kitchen.
The restaurant holds a menu of mouth watering burgers mixed with the choice of beef, chicken and quite the original idea, buffalo. I don’t know about you, but it isn’t often you see buffalo, so I couldn’t turn it down in my choices.
The table we were seated at wasn’t the greatest, but this I imagine is due to the immense popularity, so I would highly recommend you book ahead and request a table if you can.
It has a similar set up to Nandos, as in, you sit down, browse what’s cooking and then pop up to the counter and make your order and ply the person at the till with money. Simples. On your way back, you get the option to grab a bowl, or two, of monkey nuts, which I believe are refillable, so you can… go nuts!
My lovely lady, eating partner in crime, and I started off with some crispy onion rings to tide us over as we waited for our tummy fillers to arrive. I can say without a doubt, that the onion rings in question were one of the tastiest I have had, not too greasy and held together well as you crunch through them, whilst the onion had a pleasant sharpness to it. To accompany it we had the garlic mayonnaise, which was enjoyable and a very complimentary extra, however at an extra £1.25 it seemed over priced, and maybe they should consider to offer a free sauce and price up the more expensive options.
Whilst we waited for our main course to arrive, we were happily slurping away our milkshakes. My lady went for the Oreo and I chose good old faithful chocolate, both highly enjoyable down to it’s fantastic texture and creaminess, in fact, it was very clear in a few sips they were extremely addictive – plus they also looked the part in what I think was a pint high shiny bucket. This was all washed down with the table water that was brought to us without even having to ask, again in a very aesthetically pleasing bottle – very similar to a large milk bottle.
Both our burgers arrived in a timely fashion, with a smile, and they were a sight to see. Simple, clean, but delicious looking and, I am happy to say the looks were not deceiving. My lady decided to delve into what was called The Taxidriver,
(American cheese, house onion ring, Cajun relish, smoked chilli mayo, dill pickle, salad, brioche bun) and I thought I would change it up a little, and went for the The Don, (American cheese, gorgonzola, baconnaise, rocket, onion jam, house mayo, pickled onions, brioche bun) with the buffalo. Now if you are not salivating from just reading that, then you may want to check your pulse.
Both brugers, and I do mean both, were a joy to eat, yes a little messy, but that is half the fun. The Don was not only a taste party in my mouth with everyone invited, but was in fact so smooth and tender that it was disappearing very quickly, almost as if I was breathing it in. With the meats you can choose how you like it to be cooked and I chose medium rare and I was delighted with a juicy pink middle to devour, which I did so, with a grin on my face. My lady too was in a very similar nirvana to myself. We highly recommend both burgers, and if the rest of the menu is of the same standards, which I imagine it is, then you are in for a treat!
As a side dish, chips were of course a solid choice, and again to try something new the truffle cheese chips were our pick. All of it was very much enjoyed, however it did feel a little lacking on cheese, so come on guys, don’t be so shy with that golden goodness!
The offerings of food vary far more than you could ever imagine from healthy-ish burgers of kiwi and avocado, to the specialities with lamb, pork and of course my new friend buffalo – not forgetting the classics too.
I have had many a burger in my lifetime and it is safe to say that if you are a lover of such things and looking to try something new then please, for your own sake, go to the new Gourmet Burger Kitchen in Canterbury.
