Jaymar Packaging is the first UK company to benefit from the IST (UK) UV retrofit service. It has added a conventional UV system to a Roland 700 six colour and coating press.
The Crewe printing company had looked around for a second hand Roland press with UV fitted but it could not find one to match the high standard of the 2006 model press it had located without UV. The company approached IST (UK) who said it was launching the retrofit service and could help.

‘We hope by adding this UV facility we can open up new markets and produce more added value work in both the pharmaceutical and high impact packaging sectors we serve,’ said Gary Marsh, production director of Jaymar Packaging. ‘It is getting harder and more expensive to outsource UV work and it is a sector in which we see an increase in demand. We want to be competitive in this area and by investing in this equipment we will be able to control all aspects of quality, lead times and more importantly costs.’
The UV retrofit was handled before Christmas period and took just two weeks to complete. It will be commissioned and in full production at the 30,000 square foot plant by the end of this month.
‘It has been an efficient and trouble free retrofit. It was planned so that the IST engineers would work alongside the press engineers during the installation and build of the press. IST has been very helpful and forthcoming with advice during the installation and this will continue when they begin training and supporting the operators as we move into full production this month,’ added Gary.
He says the retrofit cost was comparable with the price Jaymar would have had to pay for a press with UV already fitted.
Jaymar’s customers and the market generally has reacted very positively to this new development and it is already fielding enquiries. It will continue to market the new facility by issuing brochures and samples to potential clients in the pharma, automotive, FMCG and other packaging markets.
The press is also fitted with Colour Pilot and Roland’s Eagle Eye quality system and it is anticipated that the press will also drive further investment in the finishing departments. The company will now operate two Roland 700s and is both an ISO 9001 quality and ISO 14001 environmentally certified business.
