Less than a year after installing the UK’s first 18,000 sheets per hour Speedmaster XL 145 press, Graphic Packaging International Leeds has returned for a second machine.

The first VLF was Speedmaster XL145-6+LX but this time around the food and luxury packaging plant has specified a second coater. The Speedmaster XL145-6+LYYLX also features Inpress Control 2, the second generation in line register and colour control spectral device which further reduces waste and start up time.

The press has been commissioned and staff have undertaken extensive training at Heidelberg’s national showroom in Brentford. There was particular focus on maximising the colour capability of the press, with Inpress Control and Color Assistant Pro tools, because the power of the brand is so critical to the packaging printer.

‘The double coater will give us additional market competitiveness with a wide range of finishes and product enhancements,’ said Dean Naylor, plant manager of Graphic Packaging. ‘The ease of use for the operators has been a key factor in our change to Heidelberg. The make ready times with automated washing systems, simultaneous plate change, Inpress Control and 18,0000 sheets per hour running speed are key business efficiency benefits.’

As with its Speedmaster XL105 and the first XL 145, the press will feature Logistics material handling which brings pallets of board in to the press and finished work away.

‘The reaction of our employees has been good. New investment with a plant is always good for morale in a challenging and highly competitive industry. Heidelberg has been a very good supplier and business partner for GPI,’ added Dean.
