Packaging Solutions

Chapelton has underlined the high environmental benefits of using non harmful chemical free grease resistant packaging. In particular seeking advice from knowledgeable distributors, following recent press reports about the safety of some chemicals that are being used in takeaway packaging.

The compounds at the centre of the scare are perfluoroalkyl ethyl, also known as perfluorochemicals (PFCs), with US authorities proposing to amend their food additive regulations to no longer provide for their usage when in contact with aqueous and fatty foods.

Chapelton managing director Neil Skelton stated, ‘It is essential that companies seek advice on which products are safe, and approved by the food safety regulatory authorities for use in food packaging applications and processes. By seeking out knowledgeable suppliers, such as ourselves, we can help advise and work in liaison with them to find the most suitable, sustainable and safe solution to use.’

One of the products highlighted as being a preferred alternative, and particularly suitable for food packaging, is Smurfit Kappa’s Grease Guard folding carton board, which has been specifically designed for packaging that is in direct contact with all food types. It is also recyclable, biodegradable and compostable, and can be used as an alternative to virgin fibre board with PE lamination.

One of the other relevant advantages is that Smurfit Kappa’s innovative migration barrier, MB 12, can be added to the Grease Guard range for protection against organic and sensory migrants.
