The print department at Hertford’s FT Solutions has upgraded its finishing capability with the installation of a Watkiss PowerSquare 224 bookletmaker. The new machine stitches, folds, spine forms and trims in one pass and is ‘uniquely versatile’, according to operations manager Kevin Abraham.

‘This machine produces books with a square spine, similar to perfect bound products, but at a lower cost and with less effort,’ he said. ‘Our aim was to increase the pagination of our stitched books, typically training manuals and other documents for the financial services sector. The PowerSquare allows us to produce up to 224 pages depending on stock.’
The PowerSquare has also been very useful as part of an exciting new project. FT Solutions is pioneering the very latest in 3D printing technology with a walk-in 3D scanning booth and the ability to produce extraordinarily life like figurines. The company is now marketing collectable figurines of famous footballers.
‘When we package up a figurine, we need to produce very small booklets as part of the package. We were delighted to discover that the PowerSquare is versatile enough to do this for us in-house,’ said Kevin. ‘So we don’t just miniaturise people – with the PowerSquare we can miniaturise our print too!’
FT Solutions’ print department has a range of digital machines and a comprehensive line up of finishing equipment including two more machines from Watkiss – a Mamo laminator and Mamo Perfect binder.
