Packaging Solution

In the interests of shipping and distributing its labellers in an efficient and environmentally friendly manner, Herma has substantially expanded the scope of its packaging concept. Even for most of the extra large labellers in its range, exclusive use is now to be made of the new standardised cases with die cut, made to measure corrugated inserts. For this purpose, XL and XXL sizes have been introduced alongside the existing uniform cases. ‘This enables us to ship 90% of all Herma 400 applicators by this method. Until now this option was available for only about 60 to 70% of the range,’ said Hanspeter Rombach, head of logistics in the Labelling Machines division.

Against the backdrop of sharply increasing unit sales of its 400 and basic applicators, the company initiated the switch to an all new packaging concept for this product segment in 2015. Its aims were to simplify workflows, preserve natural resources and ease the customer's workload.

As a consequence, the company has substantially reduced the portion of cases requiring individual and costly foam filling. Foam fill packaging is now the exclusive preserve of genuine custom built machines. Customers therefore benefit from a major reduction in packaging disposal costs.

Thanks to another change, they can also handle the incoming goods more efficiently than in the past. The case bears not only a prominent Herma logo, but also a virtual type plate indicating the serial number of the machine located within. ‘It is an extremely useful aid, especially for our customers or partners who receive several boxed machines at the same time,’ explained Hanspeter. ‘Customers can transport the machines internally to the appropriate locations with the protective packaging still intact, and without first unpacking every single case.’ The time saving is enormous.

The company has also integrated the drive and base units in the packaging concept. It ships more than 300 and 100 of these units respectively a year. They no longer leave the factory in neutral packaging, but proudly displaying the Herma logo. Printed circuit boards that are sent to customers are shipped in special ESD packaging designed specifically for electronic components and containing an antistatic foam insert.

Herma is maximising the environmental and climate benefits of its packaging. All the cardboard packaging can be re-used and recycled, which is good news for the environment. ‘Using plastic or polystyrene was out of the question for us. We wanted the packaging material to be as easy to recycle as possible, and our concept certainly fits the bill,’ commented Hanspeter.
