According to Royal Mail

  • An overwhelming 72% of people who celebrate Christmas would prefer to receive a traditional card this Christmas. Only 6% would prefer a festive greeting via social media and 10% via text.

  • Snow scenes topped the list of popular designs – with almost a quarter – 23% of people preferring a wintry image on their cards. This was followed by: humour (12%); Nativity (7%); a robin (8%).

  • More than half of those surveyed (64%) still had addresses and postcodes in an address book.

The first Christmas card was commissioned in 1843 by Sir Henry Cole, and designed by John C Horsley. Only 1000 were printed and sold for a shilling each. One of these cards was sold at an auction in Devizes, Wiltshire for £20,000 on 24 November 2001.
