David John Papers has added its third Renz solution in 18 months to streamline its binding workflow.
The company has invested in a Renz P500 ES. It joins a Renz AP360 heavy duty punching system and a Mobi 500 500 automated binder.
Managing director Steve Gould explained, ‘The company has been supplying us with wire for a number of years. So when it came to upgrading some existing systems it was a natural progression to go with Renz.’
The first investment was in the versatile AP360 automatic punching machine. It is ideally suited to book and calendar punching production. It features two finger paper pick up system which can handle a range of mixed stock, fast die changes and optional two part split dies for book and calendar work. A touch screen with job memory aids set up and there is a paternoster feeding system for continuous production.

Renz additions.
‘I liked the easy die changes,’ said Steve. ‘Previously swapping a 3:1 or 2:1 die would take 30 to 45 minutes. Now it takes just five minutes. When we de-select the pins it takes just seconds.’
Next was the Mobi 500. The user friendly, flexible, semi-automatic wire binding machine is suited to books, calendars and skip binding. With a touch screen assisted quick setup process, it offers the ability to bind up to a 25 mm thick product, also oversized products and flexibility of different paper formats.
‘I flew to Germany and was demonstrated the machine at drupa,’ explained Steve. ‘It was a no brainer. It was very user friendly. There is no excuse for oval shaped wire – it is always very round. I also liked the fact that it was an upright system which means the operator does not have to lean over.’
The third and final piece in the jigsaw is the versatile Renz Punch 500 ES heavy duty professional punching machine. It also has a quick die change over and de-selection pins for a quick and easy set up. It will also operate with the same dies as in the AP 360.It can punch up to 4mm in one hit.
Steve said, ‘We have got a job arriving in the next 30 minutes from someone doing a page over job. They are going to want it turned around very quickly. In the past that could have meant I was here until late tonight finishing it. Now I know it will be completed very quickly.’
He added, ‘My investment will be off the books in three years. The best thing is that we have a nice clean Renz production area. It is a very smart environment. The ease of set up and make ready has increased capacity.’
