Gomer Press is moving to latest generation digital technology, taking out a five year old machine supplied by Heidelberg and replacing it with a Versafire CP press with Prinect digital front end. The new equipment will be delivered next month.

‘It was the right time for us to take a new machine which will be faster, even better quality and which has the benefit of the extended sheet feeder for six page A4 formats,’ said Jonathan Lewis, managing director.

‘Our operators came to view the Versafire CP and they felt it was a better build and that the suction feeder, sidelays and paper path handling generally had been improved. Digital printing has become a more important part of our work, particularly for book covers and jackets.’

Gomer Press advises customers on which technology is best, digital or litho, and this will be influenced by cost and the type of product being handled. To date the company has seen the rough job run breakpoint between the two at about 500 sheets and this is unlikely to vary significantly with the new press.

‘Having the digital front end will mean we can have seamless workflows, taking in files and outputting to plate, proofer or digital press with equal ease,’ said Jonathan. The company already uses extensive Prinect workflows including Prepress Manager and Pressroom Manager.

Based in Llandysul, this Welsh family run company has been in business for 125 years. Gomer Press handles high quality colour bookwork but also monochrome publications primarily for the academic and legal publishing operations.
