Print specialists SMP Group has continued its capital investment programme with the installation of a BCS Boxer – an automatic corrugated box maker with in line digital print capability.

The fast moving nature of the company’s business, coupled with a highly diverse order mix, resulted in SMP having to store a huge range of stock sizes boxes and wraps. This occupied valuable warehouse space and invariably, the exact sized box was not always in stock.

In conjunction with staff from BCS, a thorough evaluation of box use and waste was undertaken with the results leading to a cost justification to invest in BCS kit to produce exact sized boxes in-house. The latest BCS Boxer with integrated in line twin head two colour digital printer was selected and has recently been installed at SMP's plant near Woolwich, London.

Stephen Jepp, operations manager, said: ‘The BCS kit gives us the flexibility to react quickly to the needs of our dynamic customer base. We can produce the exact size boxes on demand and with the digital printer, we no longer apply labels to the outers. We are freeing up valuable warehousing space and saving money on our annual box spend.’
