Affirming the environmental benefits and high quality of recycled fibre papers, Appleton Coated is releasing ‘Choosing Environmentally Friendly Papers’, a printed educational guide to papers made with post consumer recycled fibres.

Taking the reader on a journey of messaging, sourcing, papermaking, and transportation, the brochure showcases the attributes contributing to an environmentally advantaged paper and extols the benefits of using higher percentages of post consumer recycled fibre papers.

‘Printing on high recycled content papers is an easy and visible choice for today’s forward thinking brands to demonstrate commitment to the environment,’ said Ann Whalen, Appleton Coated's senior vice president marketing and customer services. ‘Print is a consumer touch point. Increasingly, consumers are looking for brands to use sustainable practices in all areas, including printed collateral.’

Printed on papers made at the Appleton Coated mill, the cover is Utopia U2:XG, 30% post consumer recycled and the body is Ethos Uncoated Offset 100% post consumer recycled. The use of these papers over traditional virgin fibre papers provided an environmental savings of

134 trees, 61.5 million BTU's of energy displaced (approximately 0.6 homes per year), 11,586 lbs of greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to 1.1 cars per year; 62,842 gallons of water, equivalent to just over 473,000 bottles of water (4207 lbs of solid waste eliminated from landfills.

Jenni Birkholz, senior marketing specialist, sustainability, added: ‘Most companies have sustainability goals. Paper can be a part of achieving those goals while reinforcing key principals in line with brand or company targets, such as landfill reduction, water use reduction, and energy conservation – all measurable savings with the use of recycled paper.’
