J Thomson Colour Printers has made its first move into barrel ink pumping, fitting a system from pressroom specialist technotrans.

The Scottish printing company has recently installed two new KBA presses, one of which is equipped with the latest LED-UV drying technology. The other, the Rapida 106-10 SW5 SPC, is now being supplied with process ink and sealer by the five technotrans’ 200 litre barrels.

‘KBA recommended that we consider the technotrans system given the expected volume increase and we were happy to do so being familiar through previous dealings with the press peripherals company. It made sense to make the investment and in addition we also have beta.c temperature control, beta.f filtration and a fluidos dosing system, also supplied by technotrans, on the new presses,’ said Iain Jackson, print manager.

‘The concept of ink pumping means that operators don’t constantly need to change 2 kg cartridges which increases efficiency and we have the added benefit to the business, and to the environment, of not requiring to dispose hundreds of those same cartridges. We already enjoyed competitive ink prices and our waste levels were pretty low so there was not a marked direct commercial benefit associated with the investment. However, the other benefits have made the investment worthwhile.’
