Lana and Andy Wachowski are famously responsible for one of the most iconic and groundbreaking films of the 1990s, The Matrix. Their latest opus ‘Jupiter Ascending’ delves once more into the big budget sci-fi action genre that they helped to reinvent. And, for those who love action and sci-fi mixing as one, but haven’t had the pleasure of seeing The Matrix (15), then we highly recommend you do – a must see and industry changer! The stunning and charismatic Mila Kunis graces the big screen playing Jupiter Jones, a Chicago cleaner with a tragic past and seemingly few prospects for the future. Unbeknown to her, Jupiter has inter- galactic royal blood flowing through her veins, and is in fact queen of an ancient civilisation. After a scary encounter with some extra terrestrials, she meets Caine (Channing Tatum): a genetically engineered human/wolf hunter. Armed with anti-gravity boots, a cool looking shield and Spock like ears, he joins her on an epic adventure in space. Jupiter Ascending features one of the most punch worthy villains in recent memory. With incredibly bad intentions, Balem (Eddie Redmayne) also has a comedic voice to rival Bane’s and serious mother issues that could rival Howard of The Big Bang Theory. He even has a flying reptilian minion for back up – I mean, why wouldn’t you? Some of the scripting isn’t quite up to par, and may cause unintentional laughs in places, even if its heart is in the right place. One particular highlight occurs when Stinger (Sean Bean) reassures with a straight face that ‘bees don’t lie’ – phew, that’s a relief! The plot too is completely bonkers at times, but all the more enter- taining for it. There’s even a space pilot with a baby elephant face for some reason. The question is, where do we get one? With incredibly lavish environments and highly detailed spaceships that rival the best from Star Wars, costumes and makeup on par with The Hunger Games, and action that will melt your eyeballs, Jupiter Asc- ending truly is a feast for the eyes. In fact, we highly recommend that you experience the film in IMAX 3D to truly appreciate it. Mila Kunis is fantastically cast too and mesmerising throughout. ‘Jupiter Ascending’ is a highly ambitious slice of sci-fi fun. Though with its flam- boyantly chaotic, almost theatrical nature, it may well divide audiences. Definitely more eye candy than brain candy – the Wachowskis may well have crafted their next cult classic. 7 out of 10! For more film reviews check out www.Film-Reviews.net
