Grab your mighty sword… and venture into Book of Heroes

f you are into app gaming, then you will know that there are many, many app games out there that are really not worth the memory. You download, open and delete because they are so bad. But one we have discovered that is worth a shot is Book of Heroes from Venan Entertainment – it is very moreish and once you get into it, you really do strive to level up your character to open up an increasing number of options, as well as new areas on the map and fresh weapons and armour.

So, let’s get this out of the way first. You can download the game for free, and alth-ough there are options to buy more shields (an in game currency), you really, really don’t have to. You just need some patience when your energy runs out. It will regenerate within five minutes (for two more lives and it keeps on regenerating), and in that time there is plenty of other things to do including a well moderated forum (and don’t think about being rude or saying something out of turn, you will be chucked out or reported to the moderator). Alternatively, you can enter the Coliseum and fight other players, or visit the shop or temple to ‘buy’ (not with real money of course, but with silver that you win from slaying monsters and completing quests) new armour, swords, potions and enchantments. And, if you don’t want to interact with other people, you can play the game quite happily on your own, doing whatever quests you want.

The game is based around these adventure quests, which you carry out for a variety of ‘people’ such as Majerio the merch- ant or Claude in the barber’s shop (yes you can get a change of hairstyle in there). You ‘fight’ by playing turn based ‘shots’ against a variety of enemies from pirates to zombies, from savage spiders to Rath’een, a rat like creature, and you have a number of weapons at your disposal to do this. These will obviously get more powerful as you level up – as do your enemies.

You can also join a guild and carry out ‘raids’ against goblins and the like, or even gather your closest allies and start your own guild if you feel ambitious. Guilds range from the very serious, which hold raids on a regular basis, to those who just want to have fun and be more informal.

Your character, or ‘toon’, is des-igned by you and there is a whole raft of styles, hair options, faces and clothing that you can choose from, as well as three classes – Justicar, Shadow Walker and War Mage (yes, I am a level 23 Justicar!).

We like this game because it appeals to a huge cross section of people, is not too difficult to pick up and play, and yet has a story line that keeps you enthralled and coming back for more. We are off to find the goblin king now!

9 out of 10!
