Everyone from my generation has fond memories of going to the arcade and playing the games such as; Tekken, Street Fighter, Time Crisis etc.
J-stars Victory Vs+, was, for me, very reminiscent of those older games, being filled with the same feeling of intrigue overcoming me as I played. The creators of this game were obviously trying to recreate this nostalgia. The effort that the development team have put into freshen up the fighting genre, in this particular game, is astonishing. They have created an arena, not a 2D landscape like so many others, which is quite revolutionary as these kinds of games go.
They have incorporated many of the most beloved anime ever into the game, as well as some more obscure ones. This adds great depth to the game and is very attractive to the anime fanbase.
Now onto perhaps the most important point, the gameplay. The animations are very fluid and the fully destructible environments add a certain feeling of power as you play. I felt that the graphics, however, seemed quite dated. I think the team tried too hard to make it look modern, whereas the cinematic opening before the main menu is kept in the anime style and looks fantastic. But, as I said before, it is the gameplay that counts the most in a game like this, and J-stars definitely delivers on that front. Overall I found the game fun to play and a very interesting experience, diving headfirst, into the world of anime.
