And we are back! The break is over and the wait has finished, Formula 1 is back in our lives. Being one of the most popular sports on TV, it is no surprise that there is such a high demand to experience it first hand. Well, on screen! Out now is F1 2014 from those rather knowledgeable chaps, Codemaster. We previously reviewed last year’s version and had a jolly good time screaming around the world renowned tracks. Now we get to don our gloves and helmet again, as we take on the champion of champions with burning rubber and chequered flags. The game of course gives you the opportunity to play as the teams and driver line ups from the 2014 season. Also, previously you would start off in what was known as the Young Driver Test, but now, you are launched right into the driving seat for a one lap race, and from there the game then cleverly suggests an appropriate difficulty level depending on your skill set.
Now, it is hard to reinvent the game as the basis of it is created around previous versions, however new features have been added. One of the main new add ons has to be the two new tracks, that have been
recently added to the championship and are now available for you to enjoy. It is clear to see that the game has had some improvements with its enhanced game physics combined with refined handling via gamepads to deliver a more authentic and accessible driving experience for all players.
Are you a lover of games online? Then you are in for a treat! You can extend your F1 2014 multiplayer experience with RaceNet, the free online community hub that boasts over a million members. And for those times, where you actually share a room with another human being, then the game features two player split screen racing and full online grids, with 16 player racing plus eight AI across a range of game modes. But when you fancy just a quick game and keeping it solo then you can hone your skills and win medals by taking part in bite sized racing challenges in an expanded Scenario mode, featuring a range of different scenarios based on real world challenges and moments from recent history.
Over all I did enjoy the game, struggled a little at times, and had a lot of fun, but something I couldn’t help feeling I missed was the option of driving the old Formula 1 classics. It may not seem important in the big picture, but as a fun little thrill, to be in the seat of my childhood heroes is no longer available, I can’t help but feel a tinge of disappointment – but hey, who knows, maybe they will bring it back next year?
7.5 out of 10!
