Based on the novel, Here Be Monsters!, The Boxtrolls is the latest stop motion animated feature by Laika, the same team that brought you the creepy Coraline and the goose pimply ParaNorman.

Concerned by the threat of BoxTrolls, trolls who wear cardboard boxes, snatching the children of Cheesebridge, Lord Portley-Rind (Jared Harris) enlists the help of pest exterminator Archibald Snatcher (Sir Ben Kingsley) to get rid of them. Every bit as creepy and grotesque as the Child Catcher in ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’, that old classic, Archibald agrees to, in exchange for a white hat, grant access to the exclusive cheese tasting room. But, the Boxtrolls are peaceful creatures who emerge from underground at night to scavenge through the trash for

items they can use to make useful inventions. Amongst them is a very much misunderstood sewer dwelling Boxtroll named Fish, who even cares for and raises a human boy known as Eggs (that’s the food displayed on his box). It was rumoured Eggs was abducted and killed ten years ago, and so Eggs could be the key to clearing their name and saving the race. Along the way he befriends a girl named Winnie (Elle Fanning), who also happens to be the Mayor’s daughter.

Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Richard Ayoade and Tracy Morgan also lend their voices, with typically fantastic performances across the board. Laika’s movies are always best enjoyed and appreciated on 3D Blu ray, and its latest effort is certainly no exception!

The Boxtrolls is a deliciously dark animated adventure. The characters and sets are all gloriously grotesque, with plenty of fun to be had for children and adults alike. Oh, and make sure you sit through the credits too, for an incredible glimpse at the work that went into the production, accompanied by a new song from Eric Idle of Monty Python.

Extras include preliminary animatic sequences, Dare to be square: Behind the scenes of The Boxtrolls, a feature commentary with directors Graham Annable and Anthony Stacchi, and five featurettes. Altogether it adds up to a great value package for lovers of the film.

Out now on Blu ray and DVD!
