Being the game fanatic that I am, not many games sneak up on me these days, I sort of have a ninja, or maybe more like spider sense, of when a new release is to be launched. Keeping a close eye and ear out helps, however whenit came to the screeching wheels of Project- Cars, I missed the chequered flag!

From the name, it is pretty straightforward that the bread and butter of the game is, cars, racing ones to be exact. This is for the drivers, not for those looking to drift around corners and bounce off the track without any worries or spins. If you hit that grass or gravel, it is like hitting either a brick wall or an ice road. In fact, as you go screeching around the tracks, you may find a common something missing, the handbrake. Yep, braking is all down to your timing and knowing the track, no short cuts in this game, so keep your eyes on the road! And, if you fancy yourself as a bit of a mechanic then you will love the ability to personalise your car set up from gear ratios to sensitivity of steering, and much more!

The game is one that likes to be different, and rather than you being given the typical choice to select just one motor sport, you get the opportunity to take on many sorts, ranging from go karts to touring cars, to some of the fastest cars to hit the tracks – the game offers so much! With Career, Solo, Online and Community as choices the variety of the game doesn’t stop. For those looking to take on the career path, you are given the opportunity to create a driver and make different dreams: Zero to Hero, rise from karting to the big names in car racing; Defending Champ, take on the challenge of defending your title; and Triple Crown, the mission is to master all across motorsport – the choice is yours! As you progress through your career, different opportunities are presented such as team contracts, special events and more as you continue on.

One of the most important, or should I say exciting, parts to the game is not just its game play, but also the back story that ProjectCars brings with it. For you see, unlike most titles on the shop shelves, it had a low budget of only $5 million. Now that may sound like a lot of Toffee Crisps and bottles of Coke, but for games, it is just mere breadcrumbs. The community and the developers themselves raised the funding, making it a true underdog game – our favourite kind!

Surprises in life aren’t always great, but I can say, with a smile upon my face, that ProjectCars was a good one for me. With some of the most exciting vehicles around – from karts to road cars, from retro tourers to classic track day cars, and super cars to Le Mans prototypes the choice feels endless – it is hard not to stand up and applaud the developers of this little game. The quality continues on to the tracks and environment with stunning next generation, quality graphics, it hosts some of the best interactive weather I have ever seen on any machine, in any game. So, yes, for you crazy car enthusiasts ProjectCars is the one for you, it may not be as big as some of its competitors, but it puts up a darn good fight and is a joy to play deep into the night!

8 out of 10!
